Dear Editor,
The harrowing account of the Deputy Toshao fetching on his back a patient to seek medical attention (SN Feb 18) deserves not only commendation but some form of recognition.
Given the terrain he had to traverse in order to reach the health centre it was purely a gargantuan effort of courage, a selfless act of compassion and caring.
It was disturbing to note from the account, that proper facilities, such as boats, to transport medical staff and patients, in emergencies are not available. It has to be wondered why this is so, given that communities are given an annual payout from the Low Carbon fund? Surely, such basic needs of the community should be catered for in order to avoid these situations. The responsible authorities, both local and national, need to fix this urgently.
Regards,
Shamshun Mohamed
