Kaieteur Sports – The University of Guyana (Turkeyen Campus) and Government Technical Institute (GTI) became the first teams to register victories in Petra’s inaugural Modec Tertiary Education Football Tournament, following a pair of lop-sided encounters yesterday at the Queen’s College ground.
After the ceremonial kickoff by Joao Sores, Technical Manager of Modec Guyana, the competition got underway with an entertaining double-header that drew a modest but appreciative crowd.
UG Turkeyen set the tone early in the opening match, cruising to a commanding 5–0 victory over the Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC). Keron Spencer opened the scoring in the 10th minute, giving Turkeyen an ideal start. Ronaldo Sobers doubled the advantage soon after, converting from close range following a sharp pass inside the six-yard box.
Three minutes later, Romeo Bradford struck again from close range to hand UG a comfortable 3–0 lead at the halftime break. Turkeyen maintained their dominance in the second half, tightening defensively and limiting GITC to few glaring opportunities. Deandre Anderson then extended the lead in the 55th minute, while Jaleei Alcindor added the fifth (goal) in the 75th minute to seal an emphatic opening win in their away fixture.
The second match delivered even more excitement as GTI dismantled Texila American University 7–1 in a clinical display of attacking football. Texila showed early resistance during the opening 20 minutes, but Akeem Smith eventually broke the deadlock in the 24th minute to give GTI the initial lead. Alton Fraser quickly followed up with a well-placed strike to make it 2–0.
GTI picked up where they left off after halftime, with Emmanuel Lewis firing home a bold effort in the 47th minute to extend the lead to 3–0. Kevin David and Seaton Rogers then capitalized on defensive lapses, scoring in the 55th and 60th minutes respectively, pushing the scoreline to 5–0.

Goal! GTI forcing a 2-0 lead against Texila University during their opening encounter in the inaugural MODEC Tertiary Education Football tournament coordinated by Petra Organisation.
After some eighty minutes, Texila managed a consolation goal in the 81st minute through Madu Chukwudera after Kevin David was shown a yellow card moments earlier. However, GTI closed strongly, with David completing his brace in the 89th minute and Elijah De Souza adding another in the 85th to cap off a dominant 7–1 victory.
The tournament is sponsored by Modec (Guyana), with support from Demerara Mutual Group, MACORP, Powerade, the Ministry of Education, and the National Sports Commission. Action continues tomorrow at Scotts Ground in Berbice with another exciting double-header.
