$800,000 cash, jewelry missing as Angoy’s Avenue home robbed, set on fire
(Kaieteur News) – Double misfortune struck an Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam family on Monday morning after their home was invaded, ransacked, and allegedly set ablaze.
The two-story, five-bedroom wooden home is located at Lot 1459 Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, and is owned by Donette Joner.
In an interview with Kaieteur News, her 15-year-old daughter disclosed that her mother had travelled. The teen explained that she and her 16-year-old cousin who stayed at the residence were not home at the time.
“Like three, going on to four, we got a call from the lady across the street. She told us.”
The lower flat, where the fire was allegedly set.
The house’s lower compartment was gutted, with furniture and appliances all destroyed. The upper flat, however, saw minor damages, as the flooring was scorched from below.
Further inspection of the interior revealed tumbled rooms, indicating that someone was searching for something.
Joner told Kaieteur News that someone may have been keeping tabs on their movement and capitalised on the opportunity to enter their home while they were away.
“At the moment, nobody wasn’t there, nobody wasn’t home, that’s how they got the chance to go into the place. My daughter was by my cousin in Vryheid.”
Joner’s rooms were reportedly ransacked.
The woman revealed that she had $800,000 along with 25 pennyweights of gold, which are all missing from specific locations in the house where she had kept them.
“I’m at work. And this morning (Monday) about four something, I got a call that my house on fire. When I checked my phone and I checked the camera, I saw a guy climbing on the veranda. Since one something he trying to get up on the veranda. He get up, but he ain’t get in the place at that time.”
The individual would return downstairs, where, according to her, he walked to the side of the house and climbed on the zinc to access the building.
“He carry like about three bottles of rum, he eat icicle and throw it in the fridge, eat chocolate, tumble up the house, and he skin the zinc, go downstairs and set the house on fire. And then he walk through the backdoor and leave the yard at the back,” Joner related.
Video footage viewed by this publication confirmed a male individual attempting to scale the veranda of the upper flat. He was fully masked and hooded, and wore a haversack.
Reflecting on the incident, Joner said she has no known conflict with anyone, and is perplexed over the fact that she was robbed, and that her home was targeted for destruction.
A report was made to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.
