(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Health is seeking the assistance of relatives in identifying the bodies of five victims of the MV Barima.
In a public notice on Monday, the ministry stated that the victims include one female and four males.
“Families and relatives of persons who remain missing as a result of this tragedy are respectfully urged to visit the Suddie Mortuary to assist with the identification process,” the ministry notified.

The Charity Riverfront facility which was set up for the Search and Rescue/ Recovery operations following the MV Barima incident.
The ministry said further that the identification of these victims is essential to ensuring that they are returned to their loved ones with dignity and afforded a respectful and proper burial. The ministry therefore appeals to the public for their cooperation during this difficult time.
For assistance, the ministry informed that the public can contact the Suddie Mortuary on mobile number (592) 650-8564, and Office of the Regional Health Officer at (592) 685-7746 or 685-7745.
The tragic capsizing of the MV Barima with 179 persons onboard, occurred on the night of July 18. Some 73 bodies including men, women and children have so far been recovered. A total of 76 persons have been rescued and at least 30 remain missing, authorities said.
Since the tragedy, questions have been raised about the 87-year-old vessel’s maintenance, seaworthiness, regulatory oversight, the manifest and whether the vessel was overloaded with passengers and cargo.
