(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works on Saturday announced that the over $4 billion in upgrades to the Mabaruma and Morawhanna Stellings in Region One are now completed.
On Friday, Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill and Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Sarah Browne-Shadeek visited the new stellings where they were informed of the completion of works.
The Public Works Ministry shared that the works at both stellings were executed by R. Bassoo & Son Construction Company. The works at Mabaruma cost $2.16 billion and the new stelling features a robust pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete structure.
It is equipped with a link-span bridge specifically designed to accommodate Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) vessels, including the M.V. Ma Lisha and the Kalliopi N, which will significantly improve the movement of heavy cargo and passengers.
Additionally, the facility boasts a modern terminal with a seating capacity for 60 persons.
“Designed for comfort and convenience, the terminal includes: Male and female washrooms and a dedicated baby-changing station, staff offices and a cargo storage bond, two canteens and a Benab for public use, and two toll booths to streamline operations,” the ministry informed.
The newly constructed ferry Stelling at Morawhanna was completed at a cost of $1.9 billion.
“This facility features a passenger seating capacity of 50 and is outfitted with similar modern amenities to its counterpart in Mabaruma. Both projects mark a significant upgrade in the region’s transport network, enhancing the safety and efficiency of moving people and goods throughout the Barima-Waini region,” the ministry said.
During the visit to Region One also, Minister Edghill also traveled to Port Kaituma to inspect ongoing works at the stelling there.
The stelling, which is a vital link for regional commerce and travel, is currently entering its final stages and is slated for completion in February 2026, the ministry noted.
