(Kaieteur News) – Continuing from the Linden to Mabura Hill road project, the government intends to further stretch the road works this year, by commencing works between Mabura Hill and Kurupukari.
This was announced by Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh who presented this year’s $1.558 trillion budget on Monday.
“Going forward, our vision for transport infrastructure includes the completion of the Linden to Lethem corridor, inclusive of a bridge at the Kurupukari crossing,” he stated.
He said this year the Mabura Hill to Kurupukari Road will commence, for which some $7.6 billion has been budgeted. Another $10.4 billion has been set aside to complete the Linden to Mabura Hill Road.
The Ministry of Public Works began the Linden to Lethem road link, following the signing of a US$192 million contract with Construtora Queiroz Galvao S.A., the Brazilian company in May 2022, for the asphaltic concrete road from Linden to Mabura Hill.
The Government of Guyana partnered with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the Government of the United Kingdom to fund the US$190 million project (GY$32.4billion).
The project consists of two main highways; the width of each lane is approximately 3.6 metres, some hard shoulder, both sides measuring 2.4 metres, cyclist and pedestrian lane of two metres, a utility corridor, about 10 bus stops, and nine rest areas.
The Linden to Mabura Hill Road which will be completed shortly, is just the first phase that will ultimately lead to the completion of the Linden to Lethem Road link that will then complete an overland link to Brazil.
Upon completion, the road project will provide major support to ease travel, trade and general connectivity between Guyana and Brazil and open vast opportunities by linking Guyana’s hinterland communities to Georgetown.
