(Kaieteur News) – The residents of District No. 10 Village, De Hoop, Region Five will soon benefit from a $162 million primary school, Minister of Education, Sonia Parag announced on Thursday.
Minister Parag during a community outreach disclosed that the new state-of-the-art school will be completed in 2026.
“A site was proposed for a new school some time ago, and when I became the Minister of Education, one of my first engagements with Vickchand at one of the Mandirs right here in De Hoop Road, and one of the residents pulled me aside and spoke to me about the school and having to go all the way down there to the river, and the children being as small, having to traverse that and how hard it was and how dangerous they felt it was,” the minister said.
The minister said that the new school will ensure that all children are safe and are in an environment conducive to learning.
“The investment in the Number 10 District school is $162 million. That’s the investment that we’re making in this school. And there’s nothing to hide from you. The contractor is here, and you will hold the contractor accountable to ensuring that the contract the company has signed that they are going to deliver, because guess what? It’s not what the minister wants. It is what the people deserve,” the education minister remarked.
Having been declared by the United Nations (UN) as having achieved universal primary education in the country, former Education Minister, Priya Manickhand had stated that as communities evolve and the population increases, the government would continue to build schools to cater for the children.
Kaieteur News understands that the government has constructed 24 new primary schools, reconstructed 21 primary schools, and extended 36 primary schools across the country.
