(Kaieteur News) – A new cohort of 113 midwives graduated yesterday from the Ministry of Health’s Health Sciences Education (HSE) Midwifery Training Programme, marking a significant milestone in strengthening maternal and newborn care across Guyana.
The two-year programme combines rigorous theoretical instruction with hands-on clinical practice, ensuring graduates are fully prepared to enhance midwifery services and improve health outcomes for women of childbearing age and their newborns, the Ministry of Health said in a press release.
The Government of Guyana continues to offer the programme through full scholarships, with two pathways available: Single Trained Midwifery (Urban Midwives Programme): A 24-month course designed for individuals with no prior health sector experience or recent secondary school graduates. Post Basic Midwifery: A pathway for Nursing Assistants or Registered Nurses to advance their professional training. Throughout the programme, students developed core competencies essential to modern midwifery, including clinical proficiency, effective communication, and critical thinking.
Key subjects included: Obstetrics Maternal and Child Health Family Planning Health Promotion and Education Public Health and Community Care Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, congratulated the graduates and highlighted the government’s ongoing investment in expanding health infrastructure and building a skilled workforce to improve nationwide service delivery. “In institutions where certain services are in high demand, you must ensure the highest quality of professional care is delivered,” Minister Anthony stated.
He further emphasised the importance of continuous learning: “Medicine is a field where new knowledge is generated every day. Always seek opportunities to improve yourself. Without this, what you learned in this course can quickly become outdated.” Director of the Health Sciences Education Division, Ms. Chandroutie Persaud, noted that this year’s graduating class is the largest in the programme’s history, crediting the midwifery coordinator, nursing school faculty, hospital staff, and the wider Health Sciences Division for their dedication. Graduates also reflected on their journey. Wazim Sharma described the programme as transformative, praising the commitment of nursing tutors who supported each student’s growth.
Stephanie Frank highlighted the joy of midwifery, particularly witnessing the happiness of mothers after childbirth, and encouraged future applicants to pursue the profession with love and compassion to ensure the best care for mothers and babies. The ceremony, held at Pegasus Corporate Suites, was also attended by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Narine Singh, Health Education Officer Ms. Himwatie Persaud, Senior Health Education Officer Ms. Georgel Abrams, Nursing Officer Dr. Nicola Nero, and other officials. The Ministry of Health extends heartfelt congratulations to the graduating class and looks forward to the positive impact they will make in healthcare delivery across Guyana.
