(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) for the development and/or management of sanitary landfill sites across the various administration regions.
The ministry in its document, stated that the Government of Guyana realises the tremendous importance of efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly solutions to tackle solid waste management across the country.
“The government recognises proper sanitation, and solid waste management is essential to society, business and the economy. In this regard, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development will be pursuing sustainable waste management so as to eliminate the negative effects that improper waste management has on human health, social welfare and the environment,” the ministry said.
Sites are expected to be established in: Region One – Moruca, Port Kaituma and Matthew’s Ridge; Region Two – Zorg-En-Vlygt; Region Three – New Line, West Bank Demerara; Region Four – Lusignan, East Coast Demerara; Region Five Blairmont, West Coast Berbice; Region Six – Manarabisi, Corentyne, Berbice; Region Nine – Bon Success; and Region Ten – Ituni.
The deadline for submission of EOIs is November 20, 2025 to the Ministry’s Fort Street, Kingston office.
The local government ministry headed by Minister Priya Manickchand, has committed to enhancing national solid waste management and ensuring landfill operations align with environmental best practices.
During a high-level inter-agency meeting in September, Minister Manickchand, along with ministers and senior officials from across government agencies, held discussions centered on the identification of appropriate sites across the administrative regions for the establishment of sanitary landfills.
The ministry in a statement at the time, reported that careful consideration was given to several factors, including population density, land availability, accessibility, environmental impact, and the long-term sustainability of operations. The meeting also assessed challenges with current landfill practices and the urgent need for modern facilities that align with environmental best practices.
Minister Manickchand emphasised that effective landfills are not simply about waste disposal, but about safeguarding public health, protecting natural resources, and enhancing community well-being. She underscored that the project will be pursued with urgency and cooperation from relevant agencies to ensure its success.
Minister of Housing, Collin Croal at the meeting, noted that as new housing schemes are developed across the country, corresponding infrastructure must be put in place to support the growth of communities. He stressed that proper waste management systems, including modern landfill facilities, are essential for healthy, sustainable settlements.
The collaborative initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of sustainable development, in which waste management is recognised as a core pillar of public health, urban planning, and environmental protection.
Further, the ministry noted that together with other key agencies, technical assessments and stakeholder engagement in the coming months, these efforts will ensure landfill projects are advanced with efficiency and transparency, ultimately improving the quality of life across Guyana’s ten administrative regions.
