Kaieteur Sports – Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie has been left out of the West Indies squad for the upcoming five-match T20 International series against New Zealand, with Cricket West Indies (CWI) citing a “recent dip in form” and a technical issue with his bowling action as the reason for his omission.
In a statement released on Sunday, CWI explained that the Guyanese spinner will spend the coming weeks working closely with specialists through a collaboration with the Royals Sports Group, owners of the Paarl Royals franchise in South Africa.
The arrangement is expected to help Motie make key technical adjustments and regain confidence ahead of his participation in December’s SA20 tournament, as well as the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, where he is projected to play a crucial role.
Cricket West Indies said Motie remains an important part of their long-term T20 plans, pointing out that the break allows him to address specific technical aspects of his action and return sharper and more confident.
The omission of Motie, who has been a consistent performer for the West Indies across formats, comes as a surprise to many, especially after his contributions during recent series in the Caribbean.
However, CWI noted that New Zealand’s conditions are expected to be less conducive to spin, making this an opportune time for the 29-year-old to undergo corrective work.
The West Indies squad, led by Shai Hope, departed for New Zealand on November 1, following their T20 series win over Bangladesh.
The tour, which runs from November 5 to 13, forms part of the regional side’s continued preparations for the next T20 World Cup.
The selectors have retained the nucleus of the successful Bangladesh series squad, with a few key changes.
Matthew Forde, who returns from a shoulder injury after completing rehabilitation, has been recalled to strengthen the pace attack, while Shamar Springer has been included to bolster the seam-bowling unit, following injuries to Ramon Simmons and Jediah Blades.
A notable addition to the team’s management staff is Clinical Psychologist Krisnan Hurdle, who joins as Mental Skills and Performance Coach, beginning with the New Zealand tour.
The appointment, announced during CWI’s Quarterly Media Briefing on October 1, follows recommendations from the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee aimed at improving the team’s mental readiness and performance consistency.
The Men in Maroon, under Head Coach Daren Sammy, will open the series with back-to-back matches at Eden Park in Auckland on November 5 and 6, before moving to Saxton Oval in Nelson for the third and fourth T20Is on November 8 and 9. The series concludes at University Oval in Dunedin on November 12.
West Indies T20 Squad vs New Zealand: Shai Hope (Captain), Alick Athanaze, Ackeem Auguste, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Amir Jangoo, Brandon King, Khary Pierre, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, Shamar Springer.
