(Kaieteur News) – Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony says no severe cases of COVID-19 have been recorded so far, even as infections have spiked in recent weeks across Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne).
“Over several months, we haven’t seen any cases of severe COVID. What we’ve seen is these asymptomatic cases that we’ve had in Berbice,” Dr. Anthony said.
While acknowledging the virus remains a concern, the minister said the local health system is equipped to manage current case numbers.
His comments follow outbreaks at three schools along the Corentyne corridor within the span of a single week. The first cluster emerged at the GuySuCo Training College in Port Mourant earlier this month, where nearly 20 cases were recorded — all asymptomatic. The college temporarily closed its dormitories and placed affected students under quarantine.
Cases were subsequently confirmed at Port Mourant Primary School and Lower Corentyne Secondary School, also asymptomatic. Sources at Lower Corentyne Secondary School told this publication that monitoring continues but no new cases have emerged since the initial cluster. Port Mourant Primary School has since resumed regular classes.
Dr. Anthony urged anyone with possible symptoms to get tested rather than assume they have a common flu.
“The signs and symptoms are similar to that of a flu. In the milder cases, you will have some fever, you might have a runny nose, you might have an itchy throat. If you want to differentiate what you have, then it’s better to come in and get tested,” he said. He added that difficulty breathing is a marker of more severe cases warranting closer medical attention.
The minister also confirmed that Paxlovid, an oral antiviral used to treat mild-to-moderate COVID-19, is now available and will serve as one of the primary treatment options for clinicians managing active cases.
