(Kaieteur News) – Tragedy struck on Thursday morning when 36-year-old Azim Khan, called “Ameer,” of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, died after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing into a concrete fence.
Police said the accident occurred around 05:46 hrs along the Number Two Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice. Khan was reportedly proceeding east at a fast rate when he failed to negotiate a left turn and slammed into a fence on the northern side of the road.
Public-spirited citizens rushed the injured man to the Bath Regional Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Khan, a long-time employee of the Blairmont Sugar Estate, leaves to mourn his wife, 31-year-old Dusshala Sookwah, and their young child.
Through tears, Sookwah recounted to Kaieteur News her final moments with her husband. She said that to the best of her knowledge, Khan, also called Ameer, was a moderate-pace rider. She recounted her last encounter with him. “Last night he came home and said he had to go Blairmont early morning to work, he got to leave for 5:30. He leave house this morning and it was a good (long) time.” The grieving spouse shared that she had packed his meal, and he kissed the children farewell and prepared to head to the Blairmont Sugar Estate, where he was employed for some 12 years.
Khan fathered one child with her. “He come downstairs; as usual he does kiss me. That was it. I ain’t hear back nothing from he…I just hear that he get accident,” she told this publication. She got that call from her mother-in-law, who related to her that Azim had met in an accident at Number Two Village Public Road. Calls to his phone were unanswered. Sookwah then hurried out to the scene after dropping the children off by their grandmother. “When I got there, I just see police was on the road and the motorbike was on the road, but I didn’t see my husband.” She opted to return home, but the driver with whom she travelled inquired from a passerby what happened, to which the passerby confirmed that an accident had taken place, and with a motorcyclist.
Probed further on the condition of the accident victim, the witness conveyed that he passed away. Khan was at the time riding a motorcycle (CR 3710) at about 05:46 hrs when the incident occurred, the police stated. His body is at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
