(Kaieteur Sports) – The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) made a huge move yesterday as it unveiled local security-service giant, Queensway, as the official title/tournament sponsor of this year’s Men’s Senior Inter-County Super50 Championships.
The ceremonious event was hosted at the historic Herdmanston Lodge, where host John Ramsingh acknowledged those in attendance, which featured a mixture of players, coaches and managers, as well as other GCB executives.
Those officials included CWI Director Shaun Massish, National U19 head coach and Guyana Harpy Eagles Assistant Coach, Garvin Nedd, former Guyana and West Indies Test batsman Travis Dowlin, among others.
For the players present; Raymond Perez, Ronaldo Alimohamed, Matthew Nandu, Richie Looknauth, Nial Smith, Raymond Perez, Romeo Deonarine, Johnathan Van Lange to name a name were among the invitees.
The round-Robin rules will see two teams inevitably clashing in the finals, with games being live streamed compliments of FL Sports.
GCB Operations Manager Anthony D’Andrade during the opening remarks, thanked Mr. Mohamed Qualander for solidifying his partnership with the board.
He outlined that hosting their tournament in places like Essequibo is crucial, as it marries into boosting the sport’s growth within rural areas; a move which is part of President Irfan Ali’s nationwide cricket reform/development programme, set to heavily target Guyana’s indigenous communities.
This season, the tourney will feature a bonus points system, which, according to D’Andrade, is a new addition and provides a bit more challenge to the approach of games.
During his feature remarks, Queensway CEO and new title sponsor, Mohamed Qualander, said he was honored to be a part of the competition as it coincides with his company playing a role in making the game more attractive while providing a sustainable environment for the players.
“Cricket is a very integral part of Guyana”, stated the Queensway boss who made a huge announcement as it relates to provisions being put in place on behalf of his company, to ensure necessary accommodation and transportation being provided for kids from the respective counties who will be able to attend matches as part of their inter-development process.
He noted, that with president Ali’s drive to push Guyana’s cricket system to the moon, the nearly constructed stadium in Berbice will allow more games to be played in the ancient county.
In closing, he believed that with everyone onboard the local cricket system can be stronger, adding that the most important thing is to have an impact on Youths; with focus on developing cricket at the school levels.
Dowlin, a former Guyana and West Indies Test player noted that while he’s not been a part of the fraternity due to other commitments, now with two kids playing currently at the Junior levels, he was once again back in the mix but following a call from the GCB, he plans to resume official cricket duties as one of the managers/developmental coaches.
Meanwhile, the final feature address by GCB president Bissoondyal Singh, focused on the importance of such a major sponsorship deal, something he said has solidified a spot as Guyana faces an upward trajectory movement when it relates to growth.
Singh said this senior tournament “where Stars are born”, is the ideal platform for players to showcase their talents, especially given its historic importance on Guyana’s cricket calendar.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to Qualander for sponsoring this year’s event, citing that the support goes beyond sponsorship as it shows great belief in the GCB and its players.
Singh, in closing, urged the players to show heart and passion while maintaining respect, further urging fans to come out and watch their favorite county teams relive past rivalries as they do battle for the crown.
