Kaieteur Sports – The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) / Republic Bank Limited (RBL) Inter Secondary School cricket competition has ended. In the final, Port Mourant Secondary School (PMSS) easily defeated Canje Secondary School (CSS) by eight wickets to become the Region 6 champions.
The game that was played at the Rose Hall Community Centre ground in East Canje began a bit late due to overnight rain.
Asked to take first strike, CSS found the going tough and were dismissed for 84 in 21 overs of the 30-over encounter. Kelston Kisten (4×4,1×6) top scored with 36 while Lakeram Singh made 31(4×4, 1×6).
Bowling for PMSS, captain Feaz Baksh bowling leg spin, was the destroyer with figures of 5 for 8. He got support from off spinner Rovin Lalbeharry, who picked up 3 wickets.
In reply, Port Mourant Secondary raced to 85-3 with Munesh Rampersaud striking an unbeaten 31(2×4, 2×6) and Romesh Bharrat 25 not out (2×4, 1×6). Asgarally Nabbie made 17(3×4).
Manager of the RBL New Amsterdam Branch, Seema Brijmaul, was introduced to the respective teams.
At the presentation ceremony, the winning PMSS team was presented with their trophy and monetary incentive by Ms Seema Brijmaul. Runner-up CSS was presented with their reward by Bank employee Sudesh Dhanai.
Feaz Baksh was adjudged the man of the match for his outstanding bowling performance. He received his incentive from Ms Brijmaul.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Brijmaul thanked the BCB for organising the tournament and the schools for participating. She congratulated PMSS for winning the tournament and wished the others better luck next time.
She said the sponsorship was part of the Bank’s cooperate responsibility in giving back to the community.
Long-serving administrator, Angela Haniff, thanked RBL for coming on board and assisting the BCB in sponsoring the competition.
Some 17 schools were listed to participate in the Region 6 tournament. The schools were divided into zones and played on a knockout basis in the various zones.
Senior coach and BCB executive member Leslie Solomon stated that the competition helped to unearth new talent. Solomon also served as one of the coordinators.
