Kaieteur Sports – The 2025 National Juniors Hockey Under-17 Championship, sponsored by Igloo Ice Cream and Sunshine Snacks, reached a boiling point on Friday as SHC Sensations and Old Fort powered their way closer to the finals with emphatic victories at the National Gymnasium. With the tournament set to wrap up today, anticipation is high for an action-packed finale featuring the top young hockey talent in the country.
SHC Sensations delivered a clinical performance in the Boys’ Under-17 division, dispatching their opponents with confidence as they eye a place in the championship match. Not to be outdone, Old Fort flexed their strength with a dominant display, cementing their position as serious contenders for the title.
In the Girls’ Under-17 division, the Hikers Junior Jets soared to a 6-3 victory over SHC Sensations in their final preliminary match, stamping their authority ahead of the title clash.
The Boys’ Under-21 division saw Old Fort deliver a resounding 3-0 win over SHC S’Team, climbing to the top of the standings in impressive fashion. The high-tempo clash demonstrated Old Fort’s sharp attacking play and defensive discipline, as they took control of the division heading into the final showdown.
Friday evening’s spotlight shifted to the Men’s and Women’s Open semifinals, where the drama hit new heights. Saints stormed into the Men’s final with a convincing 5-2 win over Bounty GCC, while Old Fort edged past GCC Spare Parts in a heart-stopping penalty shootout after a thrilling 5-5 regulation draw.
In the Women’s semifinal, Saints Women showed their class by overcoming Old Fort 3-1, booking their spot in the final with a composed performance.
The Under-13 phase of the tournament concluded yesterday with Old Fort Warriors capturing the championship title. GCC War Dogs battled bravely to secure second place, while Gladiators (Old Fort) claimed third, closing off the youngest division in spirited fashion.
As the tournament concludes today, all eyes are on the finals across multiple categories: Boys’ and Girls’ Under-17, Boys’ and Girls’ Under-21, and the highly anticipated Men’s and Women’s Open finals. The Guyana Hockey Board has set the stage for a thrilling conclusion, with local powerhouses ready to clash for national bragging rights.
With support from Igloo Ice Cream and Sunshine Snacks, this year’s championship has not only showcased Guyana’s emerging hockey talent but also highlighted the passion and intensity driving the sport’s growth in the region.
