Kaieteur News – Dem boys rememba small boy days. Yuh fada use to carry yuh by de barba fuh get a nice sharp trim. Line up neat neat, spick and span, ready fuh school. But soon as yuh reach, de boys in class had a “tradition.” Dem use to “welcome” yuh new haircut wid a lil tap behind yuh head.
Except it neva was no tap. Was one hot slap dat use to rattle yuh brain bax. Dem boys seh if is today times, people woulda call it chile abuse. Back den, we just tek it and grin. Lucky ting dem madness done in school now.
But talkin’ bout barba, it reminded dem boys of one story.
One elderly man wak in by a barba shap fu shave he head clean.
“How much, barba?” he ask.
“Nothin, bai. Fu a man like you, is free,” de barba seh.
Next marnin when de barba open shap, he find a dozen mangoes pon de step.
Lata dat day, a priest come in fuh a trim.
“How much, barber?”
“Nothing, Father. Yuh is a man of God.”
Next marnin, de barba find a dozen roses outside.
Couple days afta, a Guyanese man come in fuh a haircut.
“How much, barba?”
“Nothin, bai. Yuh don’t have to pay.”
Next marnin when de barba open he shop, guess wah he see?
A dozen Guyanese sittin’ down pon de step, waitin’ fuh free haircut!
Dem boys seh, only in Guyana.
