‘Twisted Lemon’ a go-to spot for refreshing lemonades

(Kaieteur News) – As we continue to highlight the remarkable stories of what inspired young people to become entrepreneurs, today we turn our attention to two aspiring lawyers, and best friends, Aaliyah Henry and Elektra Osborne, the dynamic duo behind ‘Twisted Lemon’.

Twisted Lemon, for those who may not be familiar with the brand, is a small business that provides refreshing drinks, lemonades or cocktails made with real fruits that provide an authentic flavour in every drink.

The business was officially launched on 6^th July, 2024 by 19-year-olds Henry and Osborne who are second-year law students at the University of Guyana.

“We would tell them not to be afraid; take that risk! I mean, you would not know until you try, and you try and learn rather than not try at all. We would also like them to know that a business has good days and bad days but just push through because in the end those challenges you faced can add to your success story.”

Speaking on their decision to open Twisted Lemon, the young women in a recent interview with Kaieteur News shared that during 2024, they were CAPE Law students, and the reality of the financial expenses associated with their chosen career path had set in.

“Due to these circumstances, we had conversations about starting a business, though we weren’t quite certain what to do. However, we came across a TikTok about a law student abroad using her lemonade business to fund her studies, and in that moment, we decided that’s what we were going to do, but with our Guyanese twist to it,” the aspiring lawyers explained.

Their business which has now been around for just little over two years has been making tremendous strides and have been grabbing the attention of many.

From since their launch, the young women said that the support base has been absolutely wonderful. Whether it is from family or friends or even strangers, they noted that everyone has shown tremendous support. “Many persons have even encouraged us to expand in one or another, which have motivated us to add new drinks to our menu and even to have more frequent pop-ups,” they added.

Grateful for it all, they noted however, that their entrepreneurial journey have had its share of challenges just like any other small business out there.

“Surprisingly, most of the challenges we’ve encountered have been in recent times. One of these challenges is finding a permanent location, and the search has been a great hassle because it seems like we keep looking, and we’ve not been able to find the ideal spot,” they disclosed.

While still working through this, they noted that other than that, with the rise of their cocktail bars and drinks station, they finally have a drinks competition which has just motivated them to come out with creative ideas and new drinks.

Continuing to build their way up, the young entrepreneurs related to this publication that their long-term goal with Twisted Lemon is to build a brand, make it a household name that has numerous locations. “While this might not be soon, we are working towards this goal every day,” they expressed.

Committed to putting in the work and achieving it all, our featured entrepreneurs are of the view that young entrepreneurs play a dual role in society; they act as both a buffer and a motivator.

“As a buffer these individuals ease the quiet feeling that success is somehow out of reach, showing that it doesn’t take connections and privileges to build a business. Moreover, as a motivator, they push other young individuals to actually develop and foster these ideas and dreams that they have rather than just sitting on an idea they had,” they explained.

Meanwhile, when asked what advice they have for those who looking to start their own business, Henry and Osborne said “We would tell them not to be afraid; take that risk!
