Guyana Gat Stores Weh Discount Deh Pon Ice
(Kaieteur News) – Guyana got some stores where the word “discount” apparently does not exist in the English language. Dem stores never hear about “Sale,” “Special Offer,” “Clearance” or even “Buy one, get one free,” and asking for a little reduction in price is like asking the store owner to donate one of his kidneys.
Yuh walk into one ah dem stores with yuh wallet full of hope and yuh heart full of ambition. Yuh see something yuh been watching for months and decide today is the day. Yuh pick it up, admire it, turn it around, and then gather courage and ask, “Boss, yuh could knock off a lil piece from de price?”
The owner does look at yuh like yuh just proposed that he give away the whole business.
“Discount?”
Sometimes yuh does wonder if yuh asking for a discount or applying for a government grant.
Dem store owners got a whole dictionary of reasons why the price cannot move. “That is de best price.” “We nah making much on this.” “The supplier price gone up.” “The dollar rate high.” And de favourite: “I can’t do anything on that.”
But somehow, if yuh turn around and walk out, suddenly somebody could “talk to de boss.”
De negotiation does then begin. Yuh ask fuh $5,000 off. They offer $500. Yuh ask fuh meet halfway. They tell yuh, “I could give yuh a pen.”
A pen!
At some stores, the only thing getting discounted is yuh expectation. And don’t look for no “Buy One, Get One Free.” Dem does prefer “Buy One, Get One—Full Price.”
Stock-clearance sales also rare. Some stores would rather let an item gather dust until archaeologists discover it than reduce the price. The strange thing is that de same stores does suddenly find discounts when competition appears or when business slow. Then yuh see banners: “MEGA SALE! EVERYTHING MUST GO!”
Everything must go—but apparently not below the original price. So Guyana gat stores where discount does indeed exist.It just deh pon ice.
