(Kaieteur News) – Earthquakes does shake buildings, but political earthquakes does shake people confidence, political careers and sometimes whole political parties. And if anybody want proof, just look at de aftershocks from de 2025 election, because some people still tekkin’ on like somebody owe dem a government.
Dem Coal-a-Shun lose de 2020 election and spend five years explaining why dem really win, why dem did robbed, why de PPP didn’t deserve to be there and why everything happening in Guyana was somehow evidence that de people make de wrong choice. Then came 2025, and de people get another chance to correct de mistake—according to dem—and what dem do? Dem give de APNU an de AFC another political concussion.
But this time de earthquake did come with a tsunami. APNU didn’t just lose de election; APNU lose de position as de main Opposition party. And de insult did not stop there, because de party that take away de Opposition position was not some old political giant with decades of history, a mountain of experience and a political machine stretching back to independence. Is a party that was formed only a few months before de election.
Imagine spending years in Parliament, holding government, forming coalitions, giving speeches and telling everybody that you is de alternative government, only to wake up after election night and discover that a political newcomer that barely had time to print its letterhead is now sitting ahead of you.
And while APNU was trying to digest that, de AFC was left searching for something even more basic—a seat. Ten years ago, de Coal-a-Shun was running de government. Today, one half of de Coalition has been pushed down de Opposition ladder and de other half couldn’t even get a chair in Parliament.
That is not an aftershock. That is a whole political demolition. But dem boys notice something interesting about political suffering. Some people does tek election defeat like a normal democratic event. Other people does tek it like a personal tragedy, and every time de government announce something, de trauma does return.
New road? Trauma. New hospital? Trauma. New school? Trauma. New investment? Trauma. Economic growth? Somebody need fuh call de ambulance.
If government build something, it is corruption. If government don’t build something, it is incompetence. If business growing, it is cronyism. If business closing, it is economic disaster. If foreign investors come, Guyana selling out. If investors don’t come, government scaring away investors. In other words, de Opposition supporters who still suffering from election aftershocks have discovered de perfect political condition: nothing can ever be right.
De truth is that political parties, like buildings, does need maintenance. If you ignore de cracks long enough, one day you discover that de problem ain’t de earthquake—it is de foundation.
And until dem understand that, de aftershocks likely to continue.
