The report that nobody does read

(Kaieteur News) – Guyana got a report for everything. If a government office buy a box of pencils, somebody does write report. If de pencil sharpen, another report does come. If de pencil break, well, that is serious business — committee got to investigate and another report does follow.

By the time the report reach the Permanent Secretary, the pencil done retire.

And now we hearing that some people want even more information in Government reports. Dem boys seh careful what you ask for. Government does already produce so much reports that if all of dem was stacked together, Guyana could build another skyscraper — and probably spend three years preparing a feasibility study to determine where to put it.

Every year we get Budget. Then Mid-Year Report. Then Annual Report. Then audited report. Then performance report. Then monitoring report. Then evaluation report. Then implementation report. And sometimes, if things really going good, a report on why the previous report was delayed.

Nobody knows who reading them. Dem boys seh the report does go straight from printer to shelf, where it enters witness protection.

But the real problem is not that Government produces too many reports. Is that despite all dem reports, dem boys nah see much people reading them. After producing 200 pages explaining what Government did last year, the next report does say Government must improve reporting. Dem boys seh that one deserve a report all by itself.

Maybe we need a new Government rule. Before writing a report, identify who will read it. And before commissioning another report, find the last one. Because if nobody read that one, why we ordering volume two?

At this rate, Guyana don’t have a shortage of reports. We have a shortage of people reading them.

And dem boys seh if anybody want to investigate that, please don’t form a committee. Just send us the report. We promise we won’t read it.
