Mystery surrounds car that rammed ballot box convoy – police conceal identity, commander mum

Kaieteur News – Days after a car rammed into a convoy transporting ballot boxes from Berbice to Georgetown at La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara last Friday night, police remain tight-lipped on the identity of the driver and the vehicle licence plate.

Several persons were injured and the three minibuses and a police escort vehicle were damaged. The incident occurred at La Bonne Intention (LBI), as three minibuses carrying ballot boxes from the Whim Police Station and Central Police Station in Region 6, Berbice, were being escorted.
Police in the statement on Friday provided details of the accident but did not disclose any information regarding the driver and vehicle that caused the crash. No registration number or personal details were disclosed- a stark contrast to what obtains when the force is providing information regarding accidents.
According to the statement, “All of the vehicles were being escorted by Force Motorcar #PAB 8212 when an unknown motorcar drove north-west out of LBI Access Road into the pathway of the escort, causing the police vehicle to apply brakes. In doing so, Minibus #BAB 6899 also braked, leading to a rear-end collision by Minibus #PXX 7898, which was in turn struck from behind by Minibus #BAL 2180.”
Only the three minibuses involved in the collision were identified. No image or further description of the “unknown” vehicle was released. When contacted, Assistant Commissioner of Police and Commander of Regional Police Division 4C (East Coast Demerara), Khali Pareshram, declined to confirm the driver’s identity. He stated, “The matter is still under investigation. That information will be ventilated in time to come.”
Meanwhile, it is also understood that the drivers of the minibuses involved in transporting the ballot boxes may face charges. However, Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh, when contacted, denied those claims. “I am not aware of any charges being laid against anyone. I’m only aware of the incident,” he said.
Five individuals sustained injuries in the collision. The injured have been identified as 39-year-old Nattel Stanley, an APNU polling agent from Lancaster Village, 28-year-old Evris Harte, a Deputy Supervisory Returning Officer from Corriverton, Police Corporal Anvinash Bhiro (#23966) stationed at Whim Police Station, 37-year-old Andrea Cort, a WIN party polling agent from Rose Hall Town, and 38-year-old GECOM agent Anascica Hinds from Glasgow Park, Berbice. All injured persons were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for medical treatment.
Despite the crash, the ballot boxes were transported safely and securely to GECOM’s headquarters, Public Relations Officer Yolanda Ward told Kaieteur News. “All the election materials were intact. They have already been delivered to GECOM headquarters. They are in secure custody,” she said.
Investigations into the accident continues.
