CANU head receives death threat from Spanish criminal network
…security heightened, as matter reported to int’l partners

Kaieteur News – The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) has heightened security after receiving information of death threat against its Director, James Singh.
Singh has confirmed the death threat. Speaking with Kaieteur News, the CANU Director said, “A threat against the directive is a threat against the entire organization so we have heightened our security obviously… not just me but for the entire members of the organization”.
He added, “just because it says is me … We can’t take anything for granted.”
Singh disclosed that CANU heard about the threat “over the last week” but officially confirmed the intelligence on Monday.
At this time investigators are unable to say where the criminal network is based.
“We just know it’s a Spanish network,” Singh told Kaieteur News while revealing that the threat is linked to several drug seizures CANU made.
“It is as a result of several seizures we have had, which foreign nationals have been arrested and [placed] before the court. So, coming out of that we heard some information… we have been following up on it,” the CANU head told Kaieteur News.
Local investigators have since shared the information with their foreign counterparts as the investigation into the death threat continues.
Meanwhile, Singh assured that he won’t allow the threat to stop him from performing his duties.
“The nature of the threat is something we deal with every day in this kind of business,” he said while adding, “We can’t let traffickers dissuade us by such threats.”
Notwithstanding, Singh told Kaieteur News that the death threat “will not be taken for granted.”
“I already spoke with my officers they are aware of what is going on and we have warned to be vigilant in everything that they are doing,” Singh disclosed.
