Phillipai Secondary School to get $37M water well

(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) has indicated that it will be drilling a potable water well for the brand-new Phillipai Secondary School in Region Seven, at an estimated cost of $37,017,000.

This is based on tender minutes published recently by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB). During the reading of bids for the water well project, seven contractors submitted applications for the contract, with bids ranging between $32.6 million and $74.1 million.

Kaieteur News previously reported that the Phillipai Secondary School is one of several brand-new schools the government, through the Ministry of Education, is building in the hinterland.

Former Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand turned the sod for the $275.2 million school in September 2024. That contract was awarded to Prored Resources and was scheduled for completion eight months later.

Phillipai Secondary School is expected to house 240 students and will feature three key blocks, including Home Economics and Visual Arts (VA) classrooms designed to provide students with practical and creative learning experiences. The school will also include a well-equipped library offering a vital resource for research and study, eight classrooms with essential sanitary facilities to ensure a comfortable and hygienic environment for students, as well as administrative space and a sick bay.

As of January this year, the school was still under construction. Minister of Education Sonia Parag, during the 2026 consideration of budget estimates, disclosed that the secondary school was expected to be completed in July. It is unclear whether the school has been completed.
