DPI – The government is positioning international education and skills development as key drivers of national transformation, with another cohort of Guyanese students set to pursue studies in China under the 2026 Chinese Government Scholarship Programme.
Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation, Zulfikar Ally, addressing the scholarship recipients, underscored the responsibility that comes with the opportunity.
He urged the students to return home with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to Guyana’s continued development.
“It is not just about studying. It is about learning different things, learning different cultures, learning ways in which, as a country, we can improve and do better,” Minister Ally urged.
The minister highlighted the longstanding bilateral relationship between Guyana and China, noting that cooperation extends beyond education to major infrastructure, financing, technology, healthcare and skills development.
He pointed to the new Demerara River Bridge, regional hospitals and other major projects as examples of China’s contribution to Guyana’s development.
Minister Ally said the scholarship programme forms part of a broader government effort to build a highly educated and skilled population capable of supporting Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy.
The public service, government efficiency and implementation minister further noted that approximately 170 Guyanese students have studied in China over the past six years, alongside scholarship and training opportunities in countries including India, Chile, Peru and Mexico.
Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, H.E. Yang Yang, said the partnership is becoming increasingly comprehensive, with education and training playing a central role in preparing Guyanese nationals for the country’s new development opportunities.
“Talent, as a foundation of national strength, is highly important in technology and projects, but it is people who move the work… people with knowledge, skills and experience to turn opportunities into progress,” the ambassador explained.
Ambassador Yang noted that this year’s cooperation includes scholarships, professional training in areas such as agriculture, digital governance, and the strengthening of the Guyana-China Alumni Association.
She said these initiatives are creating greater opportunities for knowledge sharing, networking and the development of new partnerships.
The students were encouraged to make full use of their time in China by pursuing academic excellence while gaining exposure to its culture, history, technology and international community.
The scholarship programme therefore represents more than an investment in individual students.
It is an investment in Guyana’s human capital, with the potential to strengthen the country’s capacity to support economic diversification, technological advancement and sustainable national development.
