Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Education has announced that the Amerindian Village of Manawarin in Region One, will soon have a secondary school of its own.
Announcing the government’s plan for the new school building, deputy Chief Education Officer with the responsibility for Amerindian and Hinterland Education Development, Martie DeSouza told villagers “Something big is happening in Manawarin very, very shortly and I can tell you it is one that you can benefit from greatly. That announcement is Manawarin you are getting a brand-new secondary school right here in Manawarin.”
De Souza had joined Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand and other officials on a recent visit to the village.
The new school will be the sixth to be built in the region, and will serve the communities of Plimpla Creek, Takatu, Mud Creek, Cabacali, St. Nicholas Mission, Central Manawarin, Burahara, Sheepara, Green Field, Mount Zion and Arawansa.
Construction is currently ongoing for more than 40 new secondary schools across the country as part of the government’s commitment to improve access to education at every level. Out of that, some 22 secondary schools are being constructed in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine.
The education ministry had reported that the national effort is focused on the hinterland regions, where the aim is to achieve universal secondary education by ensuring indigenous and remote communities are not left behind.
In Region One, five secondary schools are either under construction or were recently completed.
Minister Manickchand and team also visited the project site for the Waramuri Secondary School, which is set to be completed soon. The school which will be ready for the new school term in September, is expected to be commissioned shortly by President Irfaan Ali, the minister noted.
