Kaieteur News – The newly established political party – We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party which is headed by businessman Azruddin Mohamed has promised to provide free treatment for persons living with cancer, should they be elected to government.
This is according to the party’s manifesto which was unveiled last week Thursday, at its head office in Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
In revealing its intentions for the health sector, WIN said “For too long, our health system has been under-resourced and overstretched. Rural residents often travel hours for basic care. Many hospitals are overcrowded, rural clinics under-equipped, and health workers overworked and underpaid and are leaving the country.”
To address these issues, WIN stated that they will ensure every Guyanese gets the care they deserve through several initiatives. According to the party, these initiatives include universal access to quality healthcare by upgrading hospitals and clinics in every region with new modern equipment and technology and mobile health units in remote areas.
Promising guaranteed access, WIN revealed they intend to provide “Free treatment for persons living with cancer. Expand the dialysis treatment centre to other regions.”
This publication understands that while cancer care is not entirely free in Guyana, the current government provides financial assistances for some cancer treatment, screening and other services. Also, WIN promises to have preventive care campaigns which would have vaccinations, diabetes and hypertension screening, maternal care, and nutrition education.
In the health sector also, the party revealed it would ensure the national rollout of electronic health systems to improve service and reduce wait times. On the topic of mental health access, WIN mentioned they intend to provide trauma care, community mental health centres, and youth counselling services.
Notably, they plan on having a “National Mental Health & Wellness Day – Once per month as a nation we will gather at our community centres, public parks etc. and we will exercise, rest and relax to enhance our physical and mental well-being.”
Their manifesto also stated that intend to have universal prenatal classes that includes educational components on nutrition, brain development, and parent-child bonding, and access to nutritional care. For health delivery to the hinterland regions, the party stated that they will upgrade all cottage hospitals and health centres to ensure they are equipped with the necessary resources and have sufficient nurses, medics and doctors. Also they would reintroduce village water ambulances.
Turning its attention to health worker investment, WIN pledged better salaries and working conditions, continuous training, and mental health support for nurses, doctors, and aides. In his opening remarks at the launch, businessman Mohamed said at WIN, they envision a Guyana where the blessings of the country’s abundant resources uplift everyone and where love and harmony dispel hate and division. Unveiling their manifesto under the theme: ‘Re-building on the Foundation laid, for a Prosperous, Unified, and Safer Guyana’, Mohamed noted that they are committed to working with everyone who is willing to put Guyana above self, for it is only unity that all Guyanese can benefit equitably.
“This manifesto is more than words or a document. It is our solemn oath to every Guyanese that your life will be improved through bold policies, projects, and sustainable programmes designed to provide better living standards, heal divisions and secure our communities,” the Party leader said.
