Kaieteur News – Dem boys seh does remember de lines of de advertisement jingle: “The best part of wakin’ up is Folgers in yuh cup.” No bai. Not in Guyana. De best part of wakin’ up is wakin’ up before de cup!
Mawnin’ time in Guyana is a whole national treasure. De air fresh like garden mint. De dew pon de grass does look like lil diamonds—if yuh eye sharp an yuh ain’t still half-asleep. De sun does rise slow-slow like it shy, peepin’ out lil bit over de coconut tree dem. It gentle. It cool. It got manners. Is not like how it does behave by 9 o’clock—blazin’ down like it vex and got vengeance fuh skin.
But ask half de young people bout all this, and dem gon tell yuh: “Nah bai, me does sleep till brunch.” Brunch? Since when fry egg and two pancakes become a lifestyle? Dem boys seh too much Netflix and TikTok got people missin’ out pon de original nature show—sunrise and birdsong, live and direct.
Old people know de value of mawnin’. Dey does wake before de rooster and stretch like bamboo. Some even sweep yard like is a form of prayer. Dem boys seh when last yuh see a youth man sweep anything other than de barber floor?
But lemme tell yuh, if yuh don’t catch de mawnin’, yuh gon ketch de traffic. By 7:30, de roads turn into parking lot wid horns, cuss out, and minibus conductor hangin’ half body outside like is a protest. De cool air gone, replace by carbon monoxide perfume. Yuh breathe in and cough out regrets.
So dem boys seh forget Folgers. Or fancy cappuccino wid oat milk. Wakin’ up early in Guyana is de real energizer. And it free. Just open yuh window, step outside, and tek in de beauty—before de heat, de noise and de madness tek over.
And if yuh still want coffee, mek sure yuh drink it after yuh feel de dew.
Talk half. Leff half.
