(Kaieteur News) – Years ago—no, not just years ago, but plenty years ago—dem boys did walk into de Zoological Park, or as dem boys does lovingly call it, de Zoo. Back then dem boys was so small dat if a guinea fowl sneeze, dem boys woulda jump.
And de first thing dat catch dem boys eye was one giant Harpy Eagle sitting in one big cage.
Dat bird was majestic. It had claws bigger than some people house mortgage and a stare dat could make a politician suddenly remember campaign promises. Dem boys stand up watching it, but de bird ain’t watching nobody. It just deh there, like it done sign a life sentence.
Fast forward plenty decades. Dem boys grow old enough to complain about back pain and arthritis. Dem boys start getting grey hair in places where hair should never turn grey. But every time dem boys pass through de zoo, dem boys feel like dat same Harpy Eagle still deh serving time for a crime nobody could remember.
By now, dat particular eagle surely gone to bird heaven. But another Harpy Eagle tek it place. Same cage. Same sentence. Different prisoner.
Funny thing is, whenever Guyana want impress foreign visitors, we quick to boast about de Harpy Eagle. “National pride!” “Magnificent symbol!” “Part of we natural heritage!”
Well if it is such a symbol, why de symbol serving hard labour behind bars?
Dem boys ain’t saying let loose every jaguar in Bourda Market or tell de anacondas to go swimming in Lamaha Canal. Dat would create a different kind of tourism.
What dem boys saying is dat Guyana rich enough in forests to build a proper wildlife sanctuary—a vast protected space endangered species could breed, and birds like de Harpy Eagle could stretch dem wings instead of measuring life from one side of a cage to de next.
A zoo is a prison dressed up as entertainment. A sanctuary is freedom with protection.
Dem boys believe children should grow up seeing animals behaving like animals, not inmates waiting for visiting hours.
So if Guyana really proud of de Harpy Eagle, den stop locking it up to prove it. Free de Harpy Eagles. And let de zoo become history instead of a penitentiary with feathers.
Talk half. Leff half.

We have all those space in the jungle to give State lands to our President
and family of Mustapha, the minister….but,
not to develop a wildlife sanctuary where our wildlife could be free to roam
protected, instead of sentenced to life behind cages…
Free the farm, goldfields for the animals to roam in protective environment.
