Dem Boys Seh…
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh if Guyanese ever start exporting “inside information,” the oil money gon look like pocket change.
Dem boys remember one day a fella run into de market hollering that a big foreign supermarket chain buying out half of Georgetown. He whisper to everybody, “Don’t tell nobody, but me cousin wife brother does drive truck fuh one man who know de contractor.”
By lunchtime people done identify de land, de architect, de opening date and even which aisle gon sell plantain chips.
One small problem. None of it was true.
Dem boys seh in Guyana every situation does suddenly produce more experts than de University of Guyana does produce graduates.
Plane late? Everybody is an aviation engineer.
Rain fall? Whole village become meteorologists.
Earth shake? Is geologists from Albouystown to Anna Regina.
And every one of them got a secret source.
“It come straight from de top.”
“My partner wukking in de office.”
“Me nephew friend deh pun de inside.”
By de time dem finish talking, you would think de Cabinet holding meeting in dem backyard.
Some people simply cyan bear not knowing something. Silence does make dem uncomfortable. So if facts missing, imagination does clock in fuh duty. De less evidence they got, de more confidence they does talk with.
And heaven help de poor soul who ask, “How you know?”
Immediate answer: “Boss, trust me.”
Trust you? In Guyana, rumour does travel first class. And truth still trying to get a seat.
Talk half. Leff half.
