Kato Village dissatisfied over handling of Kendell Joseph’s body

Kaieteur News – The Kato Village Council in Region Eight on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction over the handling of the body of Kendell Joseph, following a post mortem examination.

In a letter addressed to the Regional Commander, Superintendent Ravindra Stanley, the council stated, “We write to formally raise our concern regarding the recent handling of the remains of Kendell Joseph who took the lives of two individuals before taking his own life.”

The village council explained that as the authorities were awaiting the postmortem examination, Kato faced a significant challenge where they have no cold storage facilities to preserve a body for an extended period. This matter, the council stated was raised with the Minister of Amerindian Affairs who intervened and were told the pathologist would in the community on July 24.

“Given the circumstances, the body was temporarily placed in a shallow grave. However, this situation has deeply distressed residents and goes against our community’s values. Now that the pathologist came today to perform the postmortem. The body was left exposed afterwards, this is unacceptable, the residents and church will not do the burial as it goes against their beliefs,” the council explained.

In light of this, the village council is requesting that the body be respectfully buried as requested by the pastor and villagers, that protocols be reviewed to avoid a recurrence of such distressing situations in the future, and that attention be given to improving communication and conduct of some officers stationed in Kato.

“Additionally, only one officer, Mr. Mendonca, has been supportive and responsive to the needs of the community. Unfortunately, the other officers have not complied with his directives. This breakdown in coordination and lack of cultural sensitivity is deeply troubling. The Kato Village Council, together with the local church and pastor, wishes to inform you mister commander that we do not want this happen again. We request immediate guidance and support from your office,” the Village Council stated in its letter.

It was reported that Joseph, the prime suspect in a double murder which occurred at Tuseneng Village, North Pakaraimas on July 11 was found dead on July 17 at Kato Village.
