Kaieteur News – A 29-year-old woman from Albouystown, Georgetown was arrested on Monday for attempting to smuggle seven SIM cards to her imprisoned friend at the Camp Street jail.
The accused is Shevaughn Samuels of Lot 11 Hogg Street, Albouystown, Georgetown.
It was reported that the incident occurred around 09:15h during a routine search of the items Samuels had taken for her friend, Ray Smith.
The Guyana Prison Service (GPS), in a Facebook post on Tuesday, said, “Officers discovered the SIM cards concealed inside a tube of Colgate toothpaste; a method intended to avoid detection during standard security checks. Following the discovery, the woman was handed over to the police and is expected to face court proceedings shortly.”
Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, issued a stern reminder to civilians about the severe risks associated with contraband smuggling within prison facilities, noting that such activities not only endanger the safety of inmates and officers but also compromise the integrity of the prison system.
He added that the consequences of smuggling contraband into correctional institutions are serious and can lead to significant legal repercussions.
