Kaieteur News – Investigations into the death of Adriana Younge at the Double Day International Hotel in April remain active, Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said on Tuesday.
Asked to comment on Adriana Younge’s case during an online podcast, “Safeguarding our Nation”, Blanhum said, “As a father, I also felt the heartbreak of this case.”
“It was a tragic loss that shook the entire nation and we have learnt from it,” he stated, before adding that the case remains active.
“Detectives were advised to continue further investigation and upon completion, a case file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for her legal opinion,” he said. According to Blanhum, there are factual circumstances in the case that have been hijacked by people “with sinister motives and lawless behaviour.”
He also said that former Region Three Commander, Khalid Mandall, who was in charge of the district at the time of Younge’s death, remains on administrative leave along with several of his ranks and a civilian.
Adriana’s body was discovered on April 24 in the swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel—just 20 hours after she was reported missing during a family trip at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
Initial reports by police were that she was abducted but when she floated in the pool, the public lost trust in the Force’s handling of the investigation.
Fiery and violent protests erupted, including the destruction of the hotel and a house belonging to one of the hotel’s owners.
On April 27, it was reported that Mandall was sent on administrative leave and three cops were under close arrest.
The Police Force, on April 25, had also admitted to releasing false information to the public in the Adriana Younge’s probe and promised a comprehensive investigation.
On May 2, it was reported that two cops were fired over Adriana Younge’s death. They were identified as a constable and a corporal.
In a statement, the Force disclosed that a corporal and a constable were relieved of their duties due to neglect. However, the names of the ranks were not disclosed.
The Force had also blamed a civilian employee for the false information released in the case.
It was reported that the civilian was employed at the Force’s command centre and was the one who fed information to police ranks that there was footage of Adriana Younge’s abduction.
