(Kaieteur News) – The residents of Tapakuma and Mainstay/ Whyaka in Region Two will benefit from the installation of electricity in their communities within three months.
Team Lead of the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL), Kesh Nandlall, committed on Friday to residents of Tapakuma, Region Two, that electricity will be delivered to the community within three months.
The commitment was made during a presidential outreach in the area. In a video posted to GPL’s Facebook page, Nandlall said a resident, Ms. Fredericks, had raised concerns about the lack of electricity in the community.
“We have committed to deliver the electricity in three months from now. We have already gone out and done the tendering process, and we are now in the procurement stage, and we will start construction soon. So, we’ll have the electricity available to the community in three months,” Nandlall said.
He added that GPL will take a team comprising customer service and technical staff to work with residents to ensure the application process runs smoothly once submitted.
Divisional Director of Customer Services Rhonda La Fargue said the community has approximately 100 households, catering to around 440 persons.
“We’ve already spoken to some of the residents of the community, informing them of the requirements to access service, so we will be able to do this expeditiously and ensure that customers are served quite quickly,” she said.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar made a similar commitment to residents of Mainstay/Whyaka Village, according to a Department of Public Information (DPI) release.
He assured residents they will be connected to the national grid within three months, following GPL’s issuance of a tender for the project. The commitment follows a request made directly to Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo during his Public Day outreach in Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), when residents called for electricity to be extended to the area.
Minister Indar confirmed the development at the commissioning of the Anna Regina Airstrip on Friday, describing it as evidence of a government that listens to communities and acts on their needs.
“GPL went out to tender. In three months’ time, you’re going to get electricity here,” he said.
The minister added that infrastructure projects under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration are driven by requests from communities themselves, rather than being planned without their input. The project adds to a series of infrastructure and social development initiatives implemented across the country since the administration took office in 2020.
