(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) says construction of the New Charity Market Multipurpose Wharf in Region Two is now 30% complete, according to an update issued Friday.
The $880 million project, part of the Ministry’s Waterfront Development Programme, is being executed by S. Jagmohan Construction and General Supplies Inc.
The reinforced concrete jetty section is largely finished, with the contractor now preparing to cast the final four-inch concrete top-up slab to complete the jetty deck.
Work has also advanced to the next phase: driving precast concrete piles for the jetty head. Fifty-three piles have been driven so far.
To clear the site for further structural work, the contractor is scheduled to begin demolishing a private wharf previously built within the project’s footprint.
In a related initiative, the Ministry has begun building a steel sheet pile revetment along the Pomeroon riverbank at Charity. The first phase covers 300 metres across two sections of the waterfront: one adjacent to the Charity Cemetery, the other next to the wharf site itself.
Once complete, the Charity waterfront is expected to serve as a modern hub, strengthening maritime commerce and improving accessibility for Region Two residents.
