Man allegedly kills common-law wife, attempts suicide
Kaieteur News – A 38-year-old man tried to take his own life after allegedly killing his 50-year-old common-law wife on Friday at their Lot 193 Ivan Road, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD) home.
Dead is Bibi Salima Persaud and hospitalized is Dinesh Ram, a mechanic who police suspect killed her.
The dead woman’s son, Sankar Persaud, made the gruesome discovery around 23:00hrs on Friday when he and his brother returned to their home.
He recalled that upon entering the yard, he heard the suspect groaning in pain.
Sankar told police that he asked the suspect if he was okay and noticed him lying in a pool of water formed by heavy rains in the yard.
“He immediately began shouting for his mother and got no answer,” police stated before adding that Sankar then checked the house and found his mother (Persaud) lying motionless on the floor with a wound to her throat.
Sankar reportedly called the police immediately.
When police ranks arrived, they found the suspect lying in the yard with a green substance around his mouth. They suspected that it might be a poisonous substance and ranks immediately took Ram to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient.
Other ranks checked on the victim and found her lying face up. Police reported that there were wounds seen on the left side of her forehead, her mouth, her left wrist, right hand, neck, and face.
“A kitchen knife was seen on the floor, covered in blood. Also, a bottle of suspected pesticide was found near the door of their home,” police said.
Sankar told investigators that the couple would frequently have heated arguments. The suspect, he alleged, would accuse his mother of having an affair because she spent a lot of time on her cell phone. The man said, “though they have frequent fights, they would always make up.”
