Setback for Deputy Mayor’s Cup as tournament postponed due to heavy rain forecast
Kaieteur Sports- The highly anticipated 32-team Seven-a-side Inter-Ward/Village Knockout Football Championship billed as one of the most exciting tournaments on the local calendar has suffered another major setback. The event, which has generated buzz over the past two months, has been postponed to later next month due to heavy rainfall predictions issued by the Guyana Hydrometeorological Service.

Tournament organiser and former national football coach Lennox Arthur officially announced the postponement yesterday, following extensive consultations with the local Hydromet Office.
The Deputy Mayor’s Cup, supported by the Guyana Police Force (GPF), was initially scheduled to kick off from July 5–12 at the Police Sports Club Ground in Eve Leary, Georgetown. However, it has now been tentatively rescheduled for August.
The tournament had already secured participation from 32 of the country’s top village teams, who were set to battle in high-intensity seven-a-side matches across four electrifying nights for a share of over one million dollars in cash prizes.
The Eve Leary ground will come alive this Sunday and Sunday as the ultimate Seven-a-side Football gets underway.
With the delay, teams will now have to wait a little longer to compete in what has been dubbed one of the most lucrative 30-minute football competitions in the country. As previously announced, the championship-winning team will walk away with $500,000 and a massive hamper courtesy of Ricks and Sari Enterprise. The runner-up will receive $300,000, third place will take home $200,000, and the fourth-place team will earn $100,000.
In addition to the team rewards, the GPF has contributed several individual prizes. The tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) will receive a trophy donated by Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken. The top goal scorer will be awarded the Deputy Commissioner of Police Ravindradath Budram Trophy, while the Most Disciplined Team will receive the Deputy COP Errol Watts Trophy.
Team Police is set to open their campaign against Campbellville this Sunday at 7:30 pm.
Among the teams set to compete in this year’s Deputy Mayor’s Cup are: Espanyol, Uprising, Pele, Gladiators, Pouderoyen, Herstelling, Mocha, Z-Tec Family, Uitvlugt, Swan FC, Wales, Albouystown, Timehri, Festival City, Timehri Panthers, North Ruimveldt, Stabroek Ballers, Liliendaal, Road Warriors, Sophia, Taliban, Team Police, Campbellville, Bent Street ‘A’ and ‘B’, Back Circle ‘A’ and ‘B’, Eagles, Stewartville, and Belle West Stars.
