Kaieteur News – Engineers are exploring the possibility of using the old Demerara Harbour Bridge to connect Timehri to Sandhills, Upper Demerara- Berbice, President Irfaan Ali disclosed on Monday.
The president was at the time speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the new US$133 million Ogle to Eccles Highway where he highlighted several of the interconnectivity infrastructure occurring across Region Four that will allow access to the interior.
Works have already begun to clear and survey the Sandhills road.
“And what are we doing there? So right now, we have the engineers examining the possibility of moving the old Demerara Harbor Bridge down river to connect Timehri to the Sandhills road. Why is this important? That road from Timehri to Sandhills will take us to Falmouth and then we have already under construction the Parika to the Goshen Road, that is the Del Conte Road loop that will interconnect with this Sandhills road that will take us into Bartica into the interior,” he explained.
Further, President Ali said that the Timheri – Sandhills road is going to open up “hundreds of thousands of new acreages of land for housing, mining, sand mining, agriculture, and, of course, large areas of forestry.”
“So that is the expansion, the economic expansion that will take place, and all of this, all of these infrastructure I’m speaking to you about, is the exciting transformative future that we are talking about,” the President stated.
The Demerara Harbour Bridge, which has already outlived its lifespan by over 40 years will be replaced by the new Demerara River Bridge by August. That bridge is in its final stages of completion.
Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill told reporters recently that the old harbour bridge “will not be a scrap iron; it will be part of enhancing Guyana’s development.”
