(Kaieteur News) – In a startling sign of the intense heat from a Monday afternoon fire, approximately 150 pounds of chicken stored in a freezer were found cooked after a two-storey home was destroyed at No. 8 Village, West Coast Berbice.
The bizarre discovery came after the blaze completely gutted the wooden house owned by 46-year-old Blairmont Estate employee, Nadine Pluck, leaving her homeless.
Pluck told Kaieteur News that she was at work when she received a call around 12:35 hrs informing her that her house was on fire.
“By the time I got there, two fire tenders were already on the scene, but there was little they could have done because the house was already engulfed,” she said.
The house, which she had occupied for more than 40 years and recently inherited following her father’s death, was shared with her brother, Stefon Pluck, who lived in the upper flat.
Everything inside the home was destroyed, including appliances, a computer, beds, and other household items. She also lost approximately $100,000 in cash, while her brother’s electric bike was badly damaged.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald confirmed that the fire was caused by an unattended kerosene stove.
Pluck maintained that she had taken the necessary precautions before leaving for work and noted that her brother had been at home earlier in the day.
Amid the devastation, she said a drawer containing important documents, such as land papers and passports was partially spared.
“I think it was God who protected this drawer. They’re wet, but at least I can recover them. Everything else gone,” she said.
Despite the destruction, she confirmed that none of the chickens she reared perished in the fire.
Now left without a home, Pluck said her immediate priority is to find temporary shelter while seeking assistance to rebuild.
“My next move is to get somewhere to live until I can get help to build back,” she said.
Persons wishing to assist can contact her on 619-8299 or via MMG at 628-7068.
