(Kaieteur News) – The Protected Areas Commission (PAC) has strongly condemned what it describes as the misuse and vandalism of sanitary facilities at the Guyana–China Friendship Park, warning that such actions could lead to serious disruptions for the public.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Commission expressed “profound disappointment and concern” over the condition of the newly commissioned facilities, noting that recent maintenance inspections uncovered deliberate attempts to clog the sewerage system.
According to the PAC, large quantities of industrial-grade tissue were found obstructing pipes, and in one alarming instance, a fish was reportedly discovered in a toilet bowl. The agency cautioned that such acts could result in major plumbing failures and force the temporary closure of facilities to facilitate emergency repairs.
The Commission further warned that the park is under 24-hour CCTV surveillance and that footage will be used to identify and prosecute individuals responsible for acts of vandalism. It stressed that it maintains a zero-tolerance approach to the destruction of public property and confirmed that offenders will be reported to the Guyana Police Force for criminal proceedings.
The PAC also used the opportunity to urge greater civic responsibility among park users. It reminded visitors to dispose of waste properly, use facilities only for their intended purposes, and report any suspicious behaviour or vandalism to on-site security personnel.
The Guyana–China Friendship Park, located along the West Bank of Demerara, was designed as a recreational space for families, fitness enthusiasts and tourists by the Chinese Government. The facility was commissioned on Sunday.
The Commission emphasised that maintaining the park’s cleanliness and functionality requires the cooperation of all patrons.
Appealing to the public’s sense of responsibility, the PAC said that preserving the facility is essential to ensuring it remains a source of national pride for generations to come.
