Kaieteur News – The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) indicated on Thursday that it intends to have foreign witnesses testify in the case it has brought against businessman, Azruddin Mohamed.
This was revealed when Mohamed made his second court appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty.
Mohamed was charged with falsely declaring to the GRA on or about December 7, 2020, that he purchased one Lamborghini Roadster SVJ for US$75,300 instead of its initial cost of US$695,000, resulting in G$383 million in taxes being evaded.
He was released on $500,000 bail.
On Thursday, GRA’s attorney, Sanjeev Datadin, told the court that the authority intends to have foreign witnesses take the stand. The date was set for the disclosure of statements and submissions on the preliminary issue.
Mohamed’s attorneys, Damien Da Silva and Siand Dhurjon, along with Datadin, presented their written submissions to the magistrate.
“We are contending that the charges are barred by the limitation period of instituting such proceedings. Essentially, we are arguing that they [GRA] have 6 months to charge for the offences, and in this case, that time has expired,” Da Silva told the court.
In response to Da Silva’s arguments, Datadin said that the Revenue Authority has seven years from the date of the offence to institute charges. Following his submission, the GRA attorney informed the court of his intention to have foreign witnesses testify in the case.
e disclosed that the witnesses have to be summoned through the Department of Justice, and as such, the GRA requires time to properly abide by protocols to have its intention realised.
The matter was adjourned to July 8, 2025 for further disclosure.
