Chinese medical team conducts outreach in Saxacalli

Kaieteur News – The 20th China Medical Team, dispatched to Guyana on April 26, 2025, recently conducted a free medical outreach in Saxacalli Village, Region 3.

According to a statement released by the team on Sunday, this was their first visit to the village, which has greatly benefited the residents, as local doctors only visit once a month.

“Mr. Gilbert Wilson, Vice Chairman, told Dr. Du Boxiang, the medical team’s leader, that this was the first visit of the China medical team to Saxacalli Village. Local doctors only come and work in this village of about 200 people one day a month, so the arrival of Chinese doctors was very timely for the villagers,” the statement read.

This outreach marked the 5th stop of the “Healthy Village” series of free clinic activities jointly held by the China medical team in cooperation with Guyana’s Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and the Ministry of Health.

The outreach was part of an ongoing effort to improve healthcare in remote communities and raise health awareness. During the outreach, residents of Saxacalli Village received a range of medical services, including blood glucose and blood pressure detection, disease diagnosis, health consultation, and medication guidance, and distributed various commonly used medicines for free.

Additionally, medical staff also provided at-home service to a 94-year-old villager who was unable to come to the free clinic site due to mobility difficulties. “Orthopedic doctor, Dr. Wang Fei, and nephrologist Dr. Chen Dongmei specially went to Albert’s home to provide him with medical services. The villager suffered from cervical spondylosis and knee osteoarthritis. The Chinese doctors left him some external medicines and explained the usage of the medicines in detail to his family.”

At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Du donated medical supplies to Saxacalli village on behalf of the medical team. In May, the Chinese medical team conducted a free medical outreach in Rockstone Village, Region 10. During the three-hour outreach, residents of Rockstone Village received a range of medical services, including blood pressure and blood sugar testing, traditional Chinese acupuncture, and consultations for skin conditions and pediatric ailments.

Deputy leader of the team, Dr. Jam Feng, highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating, “Whether at Linden Hospital Complex or in remote villages such as Rockstone, our China Medical Team is committed to collaborating with local doctors. Through diverse medical services, we aim to deepen the medical partnership between Guyana and China and enhance the health and quality of life for the people of Guyana.”
