Kaieteur News- The taxi driver and construction worker who were arrested on Monday in connection with a marijuana bust along the Cove and John Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD), were on Wednesday remanded to prison for possession of narcotics.
The defendants, 22-year-old Dantel Fraser called ‘Bragga’ of Lot 29 Paradise, West Coast Berbice (WCB) and 34-year-old Samuel Coates of Number Nine Village WCB, appeared at the Cove and John Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Orinthia Schmidt, where the charge was read.
Fraser and Coates pleaded not guilty.
According to a police report, the defendants were found with 4,040 grams of marijuana on May 26, 2025 at approximately 13:00hrs, during an operation by ranks of the Cove and John Police Station.
Magistrate Schmidt denied bail for Fraser and Coates, who were subsequently remanded until June 18, 2025.
According to a police statement, ranks of the Cove and John Police Station were conducting an intelligence-led operation which led to the discovery of 4,040 grams (8.9 pounds) of marijuana.
“During the operation, the ranks observed a black Fielder wagon vehicle bearing registration plate PAH 4620 parked on the southern side of the road with two males, later identified as a 23-year-old taxi driver of Paradise, WCB, and a 34-year-old construction worker of Number 9 Village, WCB,” police said.
Police disclosed that the vehicle was searched in the presence of the two persons. “Inside the trunk of the vehicle was a black plastic bag containing three large wrapped parcels with leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis was discovered.”
