(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has bolstered its ranks with the addition of 107 new firefighters, following the graduation of Course 1-2026 at the Fire Service Training School on the West Coast of Demerara.
The ceremony marked a proud milestone for the GFS, with scores of family members and well-wishers turning out in support of the newly minted recruits.
In a statement issued Saturday, the GFS said, “This graduation serves as a testament to the dedication to enhancing public services. Scores of family members and well-wishers stood proud in support of their newly minted firefighters. The firemen and women now on probation show off their newfound skills in foot drills, firefighting, and first aid. These demonstrations showcase their first-class training.”
Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham delivered brief remarks, thanking the government of Guyana for its continued support in upgrading the Service — not only through the provision of new and modernised equipment, but also through investment in what he described as the most important aspect of firefighting: its human resources. He also extended his appreciation to the parents and spouses of the recruits for their unwavering support throughout the training process.
Minister of Home Affairs Oneidge Walrond also addressed the graduates, expressing satisfaction with the success of the training programme and reaffirming the government’s commitment to the continued development of the Fire Service. According to the statement, “She charged the new firemen and women to work as a team to help save lives and property. She thanked them for their resilience and commitment throughout the training and encouraged them to remain committed to the development of themselves and country.”
Of the 107 graduates, 33 were female — underscoring a growing presence of women within the Service’s ranks.
Top honours went to Trevon Williams, who claimed the Best Graduating Student award, in addition to sweeping the Best Drill and Best Theory awards. Tomicka Crawford finished as runner-up for Best Graduating Student and was also recognised as Best Female Firefighter. The Most Improved Student Award was presented to Devindra Persaud.
The newly graduated officers now begin their probationary period, during which they will continue to apply the skills demonstrated during training — including firefighting techniques, foot drills, and first aid — as they take up active duty across the country.
