Kaieteur News- A 17-year-old boy died in a Tuesday afternoon accident after he was struck by a minibus on the Dartmouth Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
Police identified the dead boy as Yujraj Ram, a student of Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School, who resided at Lot 28 New Road, Essequibo Coast.
Police, in a press release on Tuesday, stated that the accident involved a minibus (#BAC 597), owned and driven by a 34-year-old male (name not identified), resident of Charity Squatting Area.
The minibus driver told police that while he was proceeding North on the Dartmouth Public Road, Ram was disembarking another bus that was proceeding in the opposite direction. “After disembarking, the teenager proceeded to walk out from behind the minibus, but upon seeing the approaching minibus (# BAC 597), the teenager stopped briefly and then tried to run across the road. The minibus collided with the 17-year-old, who fell onto the roadway and received injuries to his body,” police said.
Ram was picked up in an unconscious state by the same driver and rushed to the Oscar Joseph Charity Public Hospital, where he was observed to be bleeding from his nose and mouth. The teen later succumbed to his injuries around 15:20 hrs.
His body was later transferred to the hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
The driver is currently in police custody at the Charity Police Station, assisting with the investigation.
