GPF to hunt crown in 2025 Deputy Mayor’s Cup

Kaieteur Sports- The much-anticipated Inter-Ward Seven-a-Side Knockout Football Championship, popularly known as the Deputy Mayor’s Cup, has officially been rescheduled to kick off on Friday, June 6 at the iconic Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.

In a major new development, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has confirmed its full participation, signaling their commitment to this high-energy tournament. The GPF Football team, known for its strength and discipline, joins 31 other teams in the chase for over $1.5 million in cash and prizes, making this one of the most exciting editions yet.

GPF to hunt crown in 2025 Deputy Mayor’s Cup

The much-anticipated 2025 Deputy Mayor’s Cup set to kickoff next Friday at Eve Leary ground.

Originally slated for an April 30 start, the tournament faced a series of delays over the past two months. However, after productive discussions between Tournament Coordinator Lennox Arthur and Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, the event is now locked in for its new date. According to Arthur, “All systems are good for June 6.”

The tournament will span four nights, following a straight knockout format. On the opening night (June 6), 16 teams will take the field, eight will advance, and eight will be eliminated. The remaining 16 teams will play on Saturday, June 7, with another eight advancing.

The winners from each of the first two nights will then face off on Wednesday, June 11, with successful teams earning a spot in the quarterfinals, scheduled for June 14, where the 2025 champions will be crowned

The action begins at 6:00 PM this Friday with Police Force Ballers facing Team Uprising in the opening fixture. The night continues with Pouderoyen vs Swan FC, followed by six more exciting matchups, featuring teams such as Uitvlugt, Herstelling, Den Amstel, Liliendaal, Stabroek Ballers, Campbellville, Team Taliban, Agricola, Back Circle, Kitty, Bent Street, and Albouystown.

With the GPF’s endorsement, the tournament introduces new awards honouring top figures within the force. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) will receive the Clifton Hicken Trophy, the Top Goal Scorer will earn the Ravindradat Budhram Trophy, and the Most Disciplined Team will take home the Errol Watts Trophy.

What’s at Stake? First place winners will secure $500,000 along with championship trophy and medals, second place finishers will cart off with $300,000 in cash and trophy while third and fourth will have a chance to walk away with $200,000 and $100,000, respectively.

With official endorsement from both Deputy Mayor Denise Miller and the Commissioner of Police, this year’s Deputy Mayor’s Cup is shaping up to be the premier Inter-Ward football showdown in the country.

All roads lead to Police Ground, Eve Leary, from June 6 to 14. The only question left is: Who will take home the crown?
