Kaieteur Sports- With eyes set on the upcoming Junior CASA Championship in the Cayman Islands this June, the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) served up the annual Kraft Mac and Cheese Skill Level Squash Tournament at the National Racquet Centre, starting Tuesday. This year’s edition features a competitive round-robin format and has been spiced up with the inclusion of eight senior players to push the juniors to elevate their game.
The opening two days of play delivered exciting rallies, upsets, and strong court performances across all divisions, creatively named after Kraft flavours.
Day One Highlights
In The Cheesiest division, Demetrius De Abreu got off to a winning start, defeating Shiloh Asregado in his opening match. Over in Thick and Creamy, Zoey McDonald edged out Anna Perreira in a tightly contested bout, while Azaria Proffit made her mark in the Original category with a solid win over Jude Gobin.
Other juniors making their way to the winners’ circle included Mandica Munroe, Zahara Belle, Tiana Gomes, Miguel Wong, Javon Daziel, Tehani Munroe, Justin Goberdhan, Christopher Lowe, Kaiden Alli, Maxwell Viapree, Daniel Lowe, Jabril Alli, and Matthew Daby, all notching early wins as the tournament got into full swing.
Day two brought even more intense rallies and competitive matchups. In Original, Jude Gobin bounced back from his day-one loss, dispatching Connor Jacobus in straight games. Azaria Proffit maintained her unbeaten run with a clinical 3-0 win over Ingram Edwards, dropping just 10 points across the three games (11-3, 11-1, 11-6).
Tiana Gomes kept her momentum going in Thick and Creamy, outlasting Kristian Viapree 3-1 in a physical four-gamer: 11-1, 11-0, 7-11, 11-6. Zoey McDonald also picked up her second win of the tournament, narrowly edging Maxwell Viapree 3-2 in a nail-biter. Meanwhile, Nidal Bacchus came out strong against Anna Perreira, winning in straight games: 11-5, 11-8, 11-7.
In White Cheddar, both Mandisa Munroe and Ella Fernandes dominated their opponents. Munroe battled through a tight second game but held her nerve to win 3-0 against Zahara Bell (11-5, 14-12, 12-10), while Fernandes blanked Namishraj with a commanding 3-0 performance.
Three Cheese served up one of the most entertaining encounters of the day, with Jamie McDonald outlasting Lydia Fraser in a five-game thriller: 11-7, 11-5, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9. Elsewhere in the same division, Jabril Alli made quick work of Maxwell Viapree (3-0), and Kaiden Alli cruised past Nidal Bacchus in straight games.
In The Cheesiest, Justin Ten Pow and Shiloh Asregado opened their campaigns with confidence. Ten Pow defeated Miguel Wong, while Asregado rebounded from his earlier loss to sweep Ethan Bulkan 3-0.
The Spiral division featured four competitive matchups on Wednesday, with Justin Goberdhan, Egan Bulkan, Blake Edwards, and Emily Fung-A-Fat all notching convincing victories as they build momentum heading into the tournament’s latter stages.
Matches continued Thursday at the Georgetown Club, with more skill-testing showdowns expected. Stay tuned for continued coverage in our upcoming edition.
