Kaieteur News- The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is procuring two more mammography machines.
This was revealed at the recent opening of bids at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office. Three firms, Salus Diagnostic Inc. ($192,195,300), New GPC Inc. ($349,073,396), and Caribbean Medical Supplies Inc. ($92,000,000) have submitted bids for the contract.
According to GPHC, the contract is for the “procurement, installation and commissioning of two mammography units”.
Mammography units are used to screen for breast cancer.
The GPHC was the only public health facility in the country offering mammography services. However, the government, through the Ministry of Health, has been acquiring more mammogram machines.
With the acquisition of more machines, women in Suddie in Region Two, Linden in Region 10, Lethem in Region Nine and New Amsterdam in Region Six, now have improved access to mammogram services to detect breast cancer early. With machines in these communities, women no longer need to travel long distances for screening.
Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, at the commissioning ceremony for a mammogram machine at the Linden Hospital earlier this year highlighted the importance of early detection in reducing cancer-related deaths and that his government is committed to improving cancer care through timely diagnosis and treatment.
He said that breast cancer remains the number one cancer among women in the country.
“For many years, we have spoken about the need for a structured cancer programme, and now we are taking the necessary steps to implement it. By placing mammography machines in every region, we are making it easier for individuals to access screening services,” he said at the time.

Since 1 unit costs $43 Million (G) at Lethem, why are the bids so extremely
high ? $192 Million plus; $ 349 million plus and $92 million plus ?
That $92 million seem more in line and should be awarded the bid.
The other bids must also cover some bribe ? Or hands UNDER the table ?
