Dear Editor,
The 592 Voices extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the grieving family of 11-year-old Adriana Younge, whose life was tragically cut short on April 24, 2025, at the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo. This innocent child, whose lifeless body was discovered by the serene yet haunting poolside of the hotel, has ignited a wave of anguish, indifference, and fear among the citizens of Guyana. The harrowing reality that no parent should ever have to endure such profound trauma and psychological distress hangs heavy in the air.
Given the troubling history of the Double Day Hotel, marked by violence and tragedy, it’s shocking that authorities haven’t shut it down. With incidents in 2012, 2016, and now 2025, one has to wonder how many lives have been lost in between.
It is a glaring failure of oversight that no family should ever be tempted to visit such a perilous establishment for leisure. We call for unwavering justice for Adrianna Younge: this could have been my sister, your niece, or any child in our community. An independent investigation is imperative; it must be conducted without delay and free from any political interference.
We unequivocally support the family who have insisted on putting the autopsy in abeyance amid demands for their independent pathologist based on advice from their attorney, despite the imminent arrival of Dr. Shubhakar Paul, an independent pathologist from Barbados.
The unrest in Tuschen indicates that civilians have lost faith in the Executive, Judiciary, and Legislative, which are the three branches of government. While demolition of public or private property may be unlawful, the civilians had to send a conspicuous message, that enough is enough!
The complexities of this case warrant a thorough examination—factors such as actus reus (the guilty act) and mens rea (the guilty mind), the implications of rigor mortis given the warm conditions at the scene, the misleading information disseminated by the Guyana Police Force, and their troubling lack of responsiveness to the family’s pleas for answers.
Furthermore, the unsettling revelations about inoperable surveillance cameras at this establishment raise serious concerns about accountability. The Commissioner of Police, amid public pressure and calls for his resignation, has now broken his silence and has announced the reassignment of Region Three Commander Khalid Mangal following the incident on Thursday.
This is unacceptable, as a reassignment will not resolve the situation at hand, but rather a dismissal, since the commander was uncooperative and recalcitrant before the death of little Adriana. The directives from the Commissioner of Police leave Guyanese feeling disillusioned and distrustful of the Guyana Police Force, even though not every officer is corrupt.
We must also consider whether any methods resembling occult or ritualistic practices played a role in this tragic event. The 592 Voices emphasise the urgent need for justice in the horrific murder of Adriana Younge. We also demand justice for Kenesha Vaughn, Marissa Beete, Maline La Cruz, Ronaldo Peters, and Keon Fogenay, among others. Let justice be done although the heavens may fall (Fiat justitia ruat caelum).
Regards
