─ as university prepares for new intake
Kaieteur News- The University of Guyana (UG) said it has been receiving some 1,200 applications each week since the process was opened on April 1.
In a release on Tuesday, the country’s premier tertiary institution said the application process was opened for degree, diploma, and certificate programmes for the upcoming 2025–2026 academic year, which begins in September. Application will be closed on May 6.
The university said all information for courses and programmes, application processes, and other relevant details can be obtained from its official channels, including its website (https://uog.edu.gy), Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/uniofguyana), and Student Records Management System (SRMS). In addition, the university will also issue official notices, press statements, and advertisements via its media partners.
Kaieteur News spoke with a prospective student who wished to remain anonymous. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to pursue studies at the university. She said that due to the cost of her desired programme, she was unable to attend the institute last year.
“If I attended UG last year, I would have been under a financial strain to pay the fee, and if I had taken a loan, my salary would not have been enough to pay it off, and I did not want that burden,” she said.
President Irfaan Ali announced last year that, beginning January 2025, the government would remove all tuition fees from the university for all Guyanese, in keeping with his administration’s 2020 manifesto pledge. Government has already begun to write off debts owed by Guyanese who had studied at the university through the Ministry of Finance-issued loans.
“This measure will benefit more than 11,000 current students at UG immediately, and of course, all the new entrants in the future. The future belongs to all of these young people,” the president said. “This will continue the advancement of our human capital for a more prosperous future for our country and for all of the young people who will benefit from this initiative and their families.”
Some $13.1 billion was allocated in this year’s budget to finance the university’s operations- a 160 per cent increase from the $5.2 billion which was allocated in 2024.
Meanwhile, UG is encouraging students who will sit this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) to apply early while they await their results. It said students should indicate to the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) that they wish to have their results shared with the university directly from CXC. Doing so will reduce the risk of prospective students being disappointed due to the programme quota being filled.
