Kaieteur News- The Upper East Coast Demerara Seventh-day Adventist churches, in collaboration with the 20th batch of the Chinese Medical Team, will hold a major medical outreach at Nabaclis, ECD on Saturday, providing a range of services.
The collaboration with the Chinese Medical Team will see the deployment of 16 doctors, including: general surgeons, gynaecologists, obstetricians, ophthalmologists, orthopaedists, nephrologists, pediatricians, doctors of burn and plastic surgery, anesthesiologists and pain specialists, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, radiologists and pathologists. In addition to consultations for the above-mentioned specialised diseases, the Chinese team will also provide services such as blood pressure, blood glucose measurement, and body temperature measurement among others.
The Chinese doctors will join several of their counterparts in the Seventh-day Adventist Church as well as personnel from the Ministry of Health.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, Andre Williams, Pastor of the Upper East Coast District of Seventh-day Adventists, said that in addition to the services of the Chinese Medical Team, the health outreach will provide free eye care and dentistry services as well as HIV/STI testing and counseling. Other services that will be available include family medicine, treatment for chronic diseases, and health education, including adolescent health, with a focus on nutrition.
There will also be mental health counselling and prayer sessions. “Everything in the area of healthcare will be there and we are encouraging everyone to take advantage,” Williams said. He emphasised that the services will be free and that the programme commences at 9.30 am and will run throughout the day. “It’s a day of health and wellness and we will be under two large tents, south of Nabaclis, over the Railway line,” Williams added. Seventh-day Adventists believe the Bible teaches that each human body is a “temple of the living God,” which should be cared for intelligently. Additionally, the church promotes that the key to wellness lies in a life of balance and temperance. “Nature creates a wealth of good things that lead to vibrant health. Pure water, fresh air and sunlight—when used appropriately—promote clean, healthy lives,” Williams, quoting from the church manual, said. He added:” Exercise and avoidance of harmful substances such as tobacco, alcohol and mind-altering substances lead to clear minds and wise choices. Such health is a gift from a loving God who wants us to live life in its abundance. When we benefit from such love, we feel a sense of gratitude and appreciation toward our creator.” The health outreach will kick start a four-week evangelistic series at the same venue, which will be led by pastor Williams.
